Hanau

Hanau, the birthplace of the Brothers Grimm, is developing rapidly. The number of residents, jobs and new residential areas is getting larger — the town of the Brothers Grimm will soon be a city.

With its districts Steinheim, Klein-Auheim, Großauheim/Wolfgang, Mittelbuchen and Kesselstadt, the town by the Main and Kinzig offers tradition and high tech, extensive nature reserves and globally active industrial companies, a wide range of educational opportunities, numerous active associations and plenty of culture. Hanau is, therefore, a worthwhile destination for visitors and organisers.

Culture and scene

With the national-wide well-known Brothers Grimm Festival in the amphitheatre, the symphony series Congress Park Sinfonie, numerous concerts, the most diverse cabarets, literary events, the KultourSommer event series with the unique Wilhelmsbad Summer Night and much more, the town offers a varied and sophisticated cultural programme throughout the year.

The modern cultural forum in the heart of the town with six educational and cultural institutions offers a unique public space for reading and learning culture. Numerous high-quality restaurants, stylish bars and trendy clubs invite you to enjoy yourself and celebrate, and offer continuously changing events. The traditional Lamboy Festival and the Citizens' Festival, the popular Christmas Market and various district festivals enrich the entertainment offering.

Well worth seeing

Hanau is impressive: buildings such as Philippsruhe Castle with its beautiful park along the Main or the picturesque old town of Steinheim catch your eye immediately, others are only discovered at second glance.

The town's special attractions also include the Wilhelmsbad State Park with its historic spa facilities and the Comoedienhaus, the old town centre of Kesselstadt and the “Alte Fasanerie” wildlife park in Klein-Auheim with around 350 species, including a pack of Arctic wolves. Ten museums and numerous galleries invite you to visit numerous other exhibition locations throughout the year.

Markets and trading

The Saturday weekly market with over 90 stalls and various culinary offers right in front of the town hall in the town centre, the “Forum Hanau” shopping centre and numerous single-line stores make Hanau equally attractive for citizens, as well as for visitors and traders.

Several times a year, various events such as Tage der Märkte (market days) and sales campaign days attract people from near and far to the town.

Nature and recreation

Hanau is a town in the country: many urban green areas and parks, as well as surrounding nature reserves and landscape protection areas, invite you to discover, linger in, and enjoy nature. Two rivers that flow through meadows and forests also flow through Hanau.

There are also various landscape protection areas as well as FFH areas recognised throughout Europe and several protected landscape reserves. For example, in the Hanau district of Großauheim, there is a herd of Przewalski horses living in the “Campo Pond” nature reserve.
